MIRRORING VESSELS
Art Gallery Event, J Studio Makati

For Joao Crisologo and Patricia Ong, to be reborn is to overwrite the narratives that once haunted and held them back. In their first joint exhibition, Crisologo and Ong explored the concept of rebirth as mirrored through symbols of fertility - conjoined twins, birthdays, one person’s duality, and rabbits. Through their vision, these mismatched symbols encapsulate what it means to live again and again and again in pursuit of something that gives life, either for the self or for others.

Crisologo and Ong’s vision does not end there. In collaboration with eight artists, they offered their individual takes on rebirth from their own experiences that shaped their artistic identity and their work. Thus, this world is expanded through each artist’s own journeys - stories of tragedy and grief, of getting lost and slowly finding themselves again, seeking comfort in childlike images that are accompanied by growing pains. Each interpretation of rebirth is best conveyed through their distinct styles, mediums, and symbolic preferences. While each artist is different from the other, uncanny similarities and shared elements of fertility are spread throughout this collaboration, tying the narrative of rebirth all together.

For the first of many exhibitions, Crisologo and Ong shed old skins and creating a cycle of rebirth. While it does not warrant a grand epiphany of sorts, may their stories connect and linger with you in ways that will also ignite your own rebirth.
